10 Options For When The Rolex Explorer Just Won't Do

Let's face it, the Rolex Explorer is the standard. It's established. It's iconic. And since its introduction to the world in 1953, it's developed a bit of a cult-like following. An entirely justifiable one, might I add. From a fairly simple three-hander watch, you really don't need anything else.

Surely there are other options out there, I hear you remark. Well, as with most things in life, there are. And in Explorer alternatives, it is both plentiful and abundant. There is an enormous spectrum of Explorer options out there, ranging from affordable peices from Seiko and Tudor, to technical options from Omega, historic pieces from IWC and everything in between. There are, of course, micro brand options. But for the sake of brevity, let's stick to the known tried-and-true watchmakers.

For your perusal, here are 10 Rolex Explorer alternatives to consider, including a super budget-friendly option at the bottom of the article in case you're pressed for time and you want to skip ahead.

Enjoy!

Omega Seamaster Railmaster

The Omega Seamaster Railmaster is an enigmatic alternative to the Rolex Explorer, in more ways than one. Technical, versatile, proportionally beautiful and oozing vintage charm. One of the collector looking to tick a few boxes with one solid all-rounder.

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M

The contemporary choice and perhaps the most like-for-like comparison to the Rolex Explorer is the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M. This 38mm guise is, in my opinion, the perfect alternative to the Explorer, and like the Railmaster has all the bells and whistles to go toe to toe with the legend.

IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36

From IWC is the lovely little Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36. One of the most complete utilitarian pieces in the IWC line up, the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 might lack the rugged look of the Explorer but it still holds its own as a more than capable alternative.

Tudor Ranger

Tudor's Ranger is invariably the most like-for-like alternative to the Rolex Explorer. Bold Arabic numerals, a clear and legible dial, lovely dimensions and a sound engine make it a supreme contender to the Explorer.

Tudor Black Bay 39

The second Tudor, this time with the Black Bay 39. I went a bit boujee with this one, opting for the model with diamonds on the hour markers just because. But aside from that bit of added (and wholly unnecessary bling), the Black Bay 39 can definitely hold its own on this list.

Longines Spirit

With the Longines Spirit you get a COSC movement, a tough and practical exterior, lovely finishings and a practical aesthetic that speaks volumes to its pragmatic design. Probably my pick of the lot, and definitely the Explorer alternative with the best value for money ratio.

Oris Divers Sixty-Five

With its manufacture calibre boasting 120 hours, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five is definitely positioned to bring the fight right to the Explorer's front door. Looking and feeling like a watch more than able to punch well above its weight, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five is a fan favourite and one of the best alternatives to the Rolex Explorer out there.

Sinn 556 A

It's a sin to sleep on the Sinn 556 A (see what I did there), so shame on you if you did. Just kidding. the 556 A is a glorious little piece that has so much innate quality that you would be hard pressed to find a better alternative to the Rolex Explorer, especially considering it costs a mere fraction of the price. No nonsense, just exceptional watchmaking through and through.

Grand Seiko SBGW297 Heritage Collection

Japan's answer to the might of the Explorer comes in the shape of the esteemed Grand Seiko SBGW297 Heritage Collection. Distinguished, poised and beautifully finished, the Grand Seiko SBGW297 is a lovely bit of kit that might not carry with it the same hardened look but can still bring the noise.

Seiko King Seiko SPB283

The most affordable option comes in the form of the fairly new Seiko King Seiko SPB283. Not one of the faint hearted, not least because of its price tag. But consider what is brings to the table in comparison to the Explorer and what you have is perhaps the best pound for pound contender to the Rolex staple in the world.
