The Senator Collection is Glashütte Original’s defining line. It’s one that combines the dynamic and modern aesthetics of a typically German-designed timepiece with the engineering efficiency of, yet again, German-design. These pieces define the German manufacturer, and here today we have three brand-new additions to an already very impressive line-up.
The first piece is the Senator Chronograph Panorama Date. This is by far one of the most legible chronograph-based timepieces, and the addition of that big date window at 6 o’clock adds an element of daily functionality that many other pieces with similar attributes seem to lack. The atypical placement of the chronograph sub-dial registers and the date window is both interesting and, to an extent, a bit disorientating. But once you wrap your head around its unique visual characteristics, it’s very easy to see why the Senator Panorama Date is as appealing as it is amongst watch lovers around the world.
The Senator Chronograph Panorama Date is powered by the Calibre 37-01. This is an automatic movement that features the passing hours and minutes in the centre hand stack, the passing seconds in a sub-dial register, the panoramic date window and the relative chronograph time-recording functions.
The Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph Panorama Date costs $20,600.
The next piece is the Senator Excellence Panorama Date. Elegant, refined and with a super clean look to it, the Senator Excellence Panorama Date is an exceptional timepiece, whichever way you look at it. The most distinguishable feature of the Senator Excellence Panorama Date is the date window placed obscurely between 4 and 5 o’clock. There are elements of A. Lange & Söhne’s influence with the Senator Excellence Panorama Date, especially so with the location of the date window. But aside from that, this is in every way its own watch with its own agenda.
The Senator Excellence Panorama Date is powered by the Calibre 36-03. This is an automatic movement, powered by a skeletonised rotor with a 21-carat gold weight. It features the passing hours, minutes and seconds, as indicated by the centre hand stack, as well as a large date window.
The Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date costs $14,500.
The final piece released is the Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase. Like the Senator Excellence Panorama Date, it too features a similar dynamic to that of a piece from the A. Lange & Söhne atelier. But, and again like the Senator Excellence Panorama Date, the Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase holds its own entirely. This is perhaps my favourite of the trio. I simply adore the asymmetrical layout of the dial, and I love the addition of that moonphase sitting nice and flush between 10 and 11 o’clock. There is asymmetry, but there’s also a lot of balance going on here. And that’s rare to find in a watch like this.
The Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase is powered by the Calibre 36-04. Like the Calibre 36-03 before it, it shares the same base attributes, however this time there is an added moon phase module.
The Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase costs $16,050.
