We're edging closer to the end of the year, and at the turn of yet another month we celebrate with another round up of all of the new watch releases of the past seven days in your go-to retrospective news hit, Watches Of The Week. Last week was headlined by the likes of Audemars Piguet, Breguet, A. Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original all dropping some very exciting new watches.

In another absolutely stacked line up of new watches, the week that was saw releases from the likes of Greubel Forsey, Tudor, Ulysse Nardin and TAG Heuer. Swatch also appeared, seemingly out of no where, with a brand new MoonSwatch, albeit with a nifty little complication. Measuring a compact 37.9mm, this watch features the world’s first perpetual Nano Foudroyante, combined with Greubel Forsey's inaugural flying tourbillon and a manual-wind flyback mechanism, all housed within a striking white gold and tantalum case, limited to just 11 pieces. Since the introduction of its first Fundamental Invention in 2004, Greubel Forsey has remained dedicated to advancing horological research and innovation, which is reflected in this groundbreaking design that redefines traditional watchmaking concepts. This leap in technology echoes the historic evolution of timekeeping devices, from large public clocks to wearable wristwatches, culminating in the current revolution of nanomechanics that Greubel Forsey is at the forefront of.

The Nano Foudroyante operates on a groundbreaking principle where energy is meticulously managed at a nanojoule scale, enabling a drastic decrease in both energy consumption and the number of components required. This innovative foudroyante seconds hand rotates once per second, dividing each second into six distinct segments by leveraging the balance wheel's oscillations, producing two beats for each of its three Hz cycles. Notably, while traditional foudroyantes demand 30 microjoules per jump, the Nano Foudroyante achieves this with only 16 nanojoules, resulting in a staggering 1,800-fold reduction in energy consumption and a 90% decrease in volume. This achievement underscores not just precision in measuring time but also signifies a paradigm shift in watchmaking philosophy. The design eliminates the need for the entire gear train typically associated with traditional foudroyantes, relying instead on minimal, low-inertia wheels to efficiently manage energy directly from the movement. The movement itself comprises 428 components, with a diameter of just 31mm, making it the smallest movement Greubel Forsey has ever produced. Furthermore, this Nano Foudroyante is ingeniously integrated within a flying tourbillon—Greubel Forsey’s first—featuring a dial that remains aligned at twelve o’clock for enhanced readability despite the constant rotation of the tourbillon. Complementing these features, the manual-winding flyback movement is equipped with a column-wheel control, renowned for its robust architectural design and exceptional finishing, hallmarks of Greubel Forsey's craftsmanship.
