Watches Of The Week: 30/09/2024 - 06/10/2024

Another week down, another round up of all the latest new watch releases and news in the latest Watches Of The Week edition. This week's instalment is going the route of quality rather than quality, and with a less-is-more approach was fairly apparent throughout the week with only a handful of watchmakers unveiling their own respective latest and greatest.

Omega brought back the legendary Speedmaster "First Omega in Space", H. Moser & Cie added a super fun complication to its sporty Pioneer collection, while Ulysse Nardin partnered with Watches Of Switzerland to unveil a special edition of the Freak S model.

Enjoy and have a great week ahead.

On October 3rd, 1962, astronaut Walter Schirra made history by wearing the Omega Speedmaster CK 2998 during the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program, marking the first time an Omega watch was worn in space. In tribute to this pioneering timepiece, Omega has released a modern version that captures the essence of the original 2nd generation Speedmaster. The watch features a 39.70 mm case made of polished and brushed stainless steel, paired with a “flat links” bracelet that incorporates Omega's patented comfort release adjustment system. The black aluminum bezel ring includes the iconic tachymeter scale with the legendary “Dot Over Ninety” marking. Under a sapphire crystal designed to mimic the hesalite crystal of the past, the grey-blue dial is CVD coated, replicating the tone of some original CK 2998 models from the 1960s. The dial also features vintage Super-LumiNova-filled Alpha hands for the hours and minutes, along with a white varnished Baton seconds hand to match the transferred markings. Three subdials display the 30-minute recorder, 12-hour recorder, and small seconds. A vintage Omega logo is present on both the dial and the crown, while the caseback is engraved with the Seahorse medallion and the words “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE” and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.” Powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, a modern evolution of the Calibre 321 that was worn by astronauts, the watch is presented in a special box with a "LEGENDARY MOONWATCH" leaflet inside, honoring its spacefaring legacy.

H. Moser & Cie Pioneer Retrograde Seconds

  • Brand: H. Moser & Cie

  • Model: Pioneer Retrograde Seconds

  • Reference: 3250-1200

  • Case: 42.80mm x 14.20mm

  • Case Material: Stainless steel

  • Water Resistance: 120m

  • Movement: HMC 250

  • Frequency: 3 Hz

  • Power Reserve: 72 hours

  • Price: USD21,900

The Pioneer Retrograde Seconds by H. Moser & Cie. is a sophisticated timepiece that highlights the brand's commitment to both technical ingenuity and minimalist design. At its core is the 30-second retrograde mechanism located at the 6 o'clock position, which adds a dynamic flair as the seconds hand resets to its starting point every half-minute. This unique complication is inspired by measuring instruments, making it a perfect fit within the sporty Pioneer collection, which is water-resistant up to 120 meters. The dial features a Midnight Blue fumé finish, with the H. Moser & Cie. logo applied subtly in transparent lacquer, emphasizing the focus on the mechanism itself. The retrograde function is powered by a double snail cam, which allows the seconds hand to travel its arc and release stored energy precisely. The mechanism's technical transparency allows viewers to witness the intricacy of its operation, controlled by a hairspring and stud holder under the seconds axis. A silver-molded skeletonized bridge, reminiscent of H. Moser's tourbillon design, enhances the aesthetic appeal, while a two-tone disc indicates whether the watch is in the first or second half of the 30-second cycle. Driven by the automatic HMC 250 movement, the watch blends the brand’s HMC 201 calibre with a retrograde module developed by Agenhor SA. This combination of mechanical prowess and elegant simplicity makes the Pioneer Retrograde Seconds an ideal choice for connoisseurs seeking innovation and refinement in their timepiece.
